For many CLAMP fans Clover was a rather hard title to locate. Dark Horse has republished the work in its entirity beautifully.
First the pages are thick, pristine white with beautifully contrasting black ink. The color inserts are republished on glossy paper making this a true collector's item.
As for the story itself: it is one of CLAMP's more off beat works. Sure there is the general angst and sweet heroine, but Clover feels very similar to xxxHolic. Not everything has a happy ending. The futuristic setting is a bit disorientating. The reader is thrown directly in the middle of things wihtout a clue as to what is happening or why. Moreover, the character's motives and who is allied with who is rather difficult to discern.
Also the story format is unique. The first two volumes contained in the work are the main plot of the story. The third volume is more like a prequel and the fourth is a side story. I believe that the story would have been less jarring to the reader if volume 3 had been placed in front of volume 1. Also the impact of volumes 1 & 2 don't hit until you have the background from volume 3. Still, despite this order the work is well done. It tugs at your heart strings and still manages to throw in a few laughs.
Lastly, the art is as expected wonderfully done. It is an earlier work by CLAMP so the style is more like Wish than newer works such as xxxHolic or Tsubasa.
