Valerie Goldsilk normally gives us curiously Edwardian pieces of Far East romantic intrigue set in and around the business world of China and Hong Kong. This police procedural is a bit of a departure. It is written in hard, direct language with graphic violence and sex. It manages to capture a time and place not long ago but which certainly no longer exists. It is a bit reminiscent of the 'Life on Mars' television series set in the 70's in Manchester. Apart from Scrimple, the over-weight bumbling anti-hero who staggers from one mishap into the next while clutching a bottle of vodka there are very few really sympathetic characters in the story but overall it is a cracking, darkly sordid read.
