(More customer reviews)Valerie Goldsilk normally gives us curiously Edwardian pieces of Far East romantic intrigue set in and around the business world of China and Hong Kong. This police procedural is a bit of a departure. It is written in hard, direct language with graphic violence and sex. It manages to capture a time and place not long ago but which certainly no longer exists. It is a bit reminiscent of the 'Life on Mars' television series set in the 70's in Manchester. Apart from Scrimple, the over-weight bumbling anti-hero who staggers from one mishap into the next while clutching a bottle of vodka there are very few really sympathetic characters in the story but overall it is a cracking, darkly sordid read.
